Gold necklace auctioned for charity (January 29, 2008)

A 14-carat gold necklace will be sold in a live action to benefit the American Heart Association next month, it has emerged.

The necklace, nicknamed Hearts of Gold, will be sold during the association's 50th Anniversary Heart Ball, which will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina on February 9th.

It features a gold heart-shaped clasp with diamonds, which can also be worn as a pendent, as well as white gold and diamond dividers between large pearls from Tahiti and the South Sea.

Designed specifically for the event by Mia Katrin for Jewel Cotur LLC, the necklace follows in the footsteps of last year's charitable creation.

Last year, the Ruby Heart Necklace, which featured 18-carat and 22-carat gold, was auctioned at an American Heart Association event in Conover, North Carolina.

It was rumoured to have sold for "thousands of dollars" to an Emmy award-winning news presenter.

In related news, the American Heart Association has recently kicked off its Start! Challenge campaign, fronted by musician Donny Osmond, to encourage people to commit to a healthier lifestyle.
